You are being asked to be a volunteer in a research study. The purpose of this study is to understand how human can understand machine translated passages. The survey will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

Please remember to take a picture or screenshot of the consent form for your records.

Our study is restricted to participants who are 18 years of age or older.

This study is restricted to participants who are physically located in the United States at the time they participate. If you are not currently physically located in the United States, you cannot participate.

We need to make sure that you have sufficient English proficiency to participate in this study. Please read the following statement carefully.

Study instructions

Before you begin

You will complete 33 questions. For each question, you will read a passage that is translated from a different language to English (with 1 passage will be in English originally). You will then read a question prompt and 4 multiple-choice answer options that are written originally in English. Select the answer that you think is most correct based on the passage. Afterwards, you will rate how useful the passage was in helping you answer the question.

  • Read each passage and question carefully.
  • Select one multiple-choice answer entirely based on the passage. If none of the choices seem appropriate, select the answer that is closest to being correct.
  • You might see passages and questions that are similar to each other. Please answer each question independently and do not try to remember your previous answers.
  • Use the “Back” button if you want to review or change an earlier answer. Any changed multiple-choice answer or usefulness rating will replace the previously saved response.

General feedback

After the questions, you will be asked to provide general feedback on the overall quality of the passages, including their clarity, fluency, usefulness, or recurring problems you noticed.

Gift card email

After providing general feedback, you will be asked for an email address. The research team will use it manually to distribute your $15 Amazon gift card. The email is stored separately from the research-response export.
